Beauty & Personal Care Buying Guide for Indian Skin and Hair
Beauty and personal care is the easiest category to overbuy and the hardest to get right. This guide keeps it practical: identify your skin and hair type, buy five things that work, and check authenticity before you pay.

1.Start with skin type, not marketing
Oily skin shines within two hours of washing and needs gel cleansers and light, non-comedogenic moisturisers. Dry skin feels tight and needs cream cleansers and richer moisturisers. Combination skin is oily in the T-zone only. Sensitive skin reacts with redness and needs fragrance-free formulas.
A working routine is four steps: cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen in the morning, and one treatment product at night. Anything beyond that is optional.
2.Sunscreen is the non-negotiable
For Indian sunlight, use SPF 30 or above with broad-spectrum protection, applied every morning even indoors near windows, and reapplied if you are outdoors for long periods.
Gel and fluid textures suit humid cities better than thick creams and are far more likely to be used daily, which matters more than the number on the bottle.
3.Haircare for Indian conditions
Hard water, humidity and dust mean most people need a gentle sulphate-light shampoo two or three times a week, conditioner on the lengths, and oiling once or twice weekly if it suits your scalp.
Dandruff that persists past a few weeks needs an active anti-dandruff formula, not a stronger regular shampoo. Hair fall with visible scalp changes deserves a doctor rather than a new bottle.
4.Personal hygiene basics to keep stocked
Toothpaste and brushes, floss or interdental brushes, deodorant, sanitary products, razors and blades, nail clippers, hand sanitiser, and a basic body lotion. These are monthly or quarterly restocks, not emergencies โ until they are.
Sexual wellness products are available to adults only and are delivered in discreet packaging.
5.Buying safely online
Check the product page for the pack size, MRP, batch and expiry expectations, and buy sealed packs only. Report a broken seal or a damaged product the same day.
Be realistic about claims. No cream changes your skin tone, no shampoo regrows hair, and any product promising an overnight transformation is selling optimism.
Frequently asked questions
Which SPF should I use in India?
SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum, applied every morning and reapplied during long outdoor exposure.
Can beauty products be returned?
Sealed, unused products with a genuine issue such as damage, wrong item or short expiry can be raised for refund. Opened cosmetics and hygiene products generally cannot be returned for hygiene reasons.
How do I know a product is authentic?
Buy sealed packs, check the pack, batch and MRP against the product page, and report anything that looks tampered with immediately.
What is the minimum routine that works?
Cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen. Add one treatment product only if you have a specific concern.
Are medicines available with personal care?
Prescription medicines are sold only by licensed shops against a valid prescription where the law permits. General personal care items have no such restriction.
