How to Sell Online From Your Kirana Shop: A Merchant's Guide

If you run a shop, online orders are additional demand from streets you already serve โ€” without renting more space. This guide walks through exactly what it takes to go live on Dookan, from documents to your first payout, and what separates shops that earn well from shops that stall.

1.What you need before you start

A shop with a fixed address and reachable phone number. Identity and business documents: Aadhaar and PAN for the owner, plus GST or Udyam registration if you have it, and an FSSAI licence if you sell food.

A bank account in the shop or owner's name for payouts. Verification is done either through DigiLocker or by uploading documents for manual review โ€” both routes end in the same verified status.

2.Listing your products properly

Each item needs a clear name, brand, category and subcategory, pack unit and quantity, MRP, selling price, GST rate if applicable, stock count, and up to ten photographs. Good photos are the single biggest driver of conversion in grocery.

Use the bulk entry screen or the Excel template when you are adding your full catalogue. One row per product, with dropdowns for categories and units, means a few hundred items can go live in an afternoon instead of a week.

Keep the selling price at or below MRP for MRP-controlled goods. Accurate pack sizes matter more than clever names โ€” customers search by what is printed on the packet.

3.Managing stock so you never cancel

Stock drives everything. Orders are offered only to shops that hold enough of every item, so an out-of-date stock count costs you orders and reputation at the same time.

The vendor dashboard shows live stock that drops as orders come in. Use bulk actions to hide unavailable items or apply a percentage price change across a range instead of editing rows one at a time.

4.Running orders on a busy day

You see each order with items, quantities and payment status. Accept, pack, and mark it ready. A delivery partner is assigned only after packing, so riders are not crowding your counter.

For online payments, you can accept only after payment has been captured โ€” you are never packing against money that has not arrived. Cash-on-delivery amounts are collected by the rider and settled to you.

5.Commission, payouts and what you actually earn

Your settlement is based on the value of goods you supplied. Delivery charges belong to the delivery side of the order and are not part of your product earnings, which is why the vendor screen shows product totals only.

Commission is deducted per order and your net amount is settled to your bank account on the platform's payout cycle. Every deduction is visible against the order so you can reconcile against your own book.

6.What high-performing shops do differently

They keep 200+ items live rather than 30, photograph everything on a plain surface, update stock daily, accept orders within a minute, and never list what they cannot supply within the hour.

They also treat online as the same shop, not a side business: same pricing, same quality, same weights. Repeat customers in a 2 km radius are the entire economics of hyperlocal.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need GST to sell online?

You need GST where the law requires it for your turnover and products. Udyam registration plus applicable licences such as FSSAI for food are also accepted as business proof.

How do I upload hundreds of products quickly?

Download the Excel import template, fill one row per product with category, unit, MRP, price and stock, and upload it. Validation errors are shown row by row.

Who sets my prices?

You do, within MRP limits. Different shops on the platform can price the same product differently.

When do I get paid?

Your net amount after commission is settled to your registered bank account on the payout cycle described in the payment terms for shops.

Can I pause when my shop is closed?

Yes. Mark the shop closed or set holidays and you will not be offered orders until you reopen.
